Trigger, locks, everything functions as it should. No wood rot. This has both open sights and a fancy pop up peep sight. Fancy fiddleback walnut stock. Made aprox around 1850+ This is a shooter! I personally have shot the 36 and it will stack them at 40 yards! No clue on the rifling twist folks, but its most likely made for patched balls. I was hitting the same hole at 40 yards with this rifle. There is a hairline crack on top of the breech area where the barrel slips ( or screws? ) into. This has not ever shown any sign of powder reside during loading. I shot 40gr 3fg and nothing ever came out or opened up. I checked the breech with a bore camera and nothing shows up as far as an internal crack, so this is just a crack in the metal that houses the barrel, not the breech plug. I'll post this hairline crack as the very first pic so its easier to find. Both locks are strong and clean inside. The .36cal hammer has a little wiggle, but nothing serious. Both hammer screws are solid and not stripped out. The butt plate has an old repair where they normally break off over the year. The repair is super clean and strong. Here we present a Tabatiere Breech-loading Shotgun, frequently known as “Zulu”. The origin of this shotgun is an interesting one. Originally, this was an 1857 French musket. Soon after they converted these muzzleloaders to breech-loaders, using the Snider system, so that they became known as the System 1867. They were used in the Franco-Prussian War in which the French were defeated. By the end of the war, the French decided that the converted muskets were unacceptable and once again updated their arsenals, this time with the 1874 Gras. Being that there was no military use for these surplus guns as they were, a Belgian gunmaker, Bertrand & Fils, had the idea to convert these (for a second time) into shotguns. The name “Zulu” was probably inspired by the British Colonial Zulu War of 1879, around the time period where sales of these guns was at its highest. Imports to the United States were good throughout the end of the 19th Century, until domestic production of single shot shotguns caught up with competitive options. Companies like E.C. Meacham in St. Louis and Sears & Roebuck in Chicago both sold these and marketed them as “an admirable Boy's or Farmer's Gun, and fills a long-felt want for a good breechloader at a moderate price. 12 gauge, 7 1/2 pounds, 33 inch. Uses regular brass or paper shells.” This as the Western portion of the United States was still quite unsettled and need for affordable workhorse firearms was high. This one is marked “Hunter” on the top of the barrel. The stock is highly figured flame walnut and only has 2 small blemishes at the rear of the receiver and at the forearm wedge pin. See detailed pictures for a close look. The overall condition is extremely good. The blued parts are clean, with some light discoloration The markings are clear. The action is excellent. I bought a brand new, complete, stock, and dropped in a Brand New, CVA Hawken barrel. I used a .54cal 28" 15/16" CVA Hawken barrel, removed all factory stamping, and stamped my own 54 marking on the barrel. This barrel is a deep groove 1:48 twist and is brand new! Never even had a cap through it. Rifle weighs slightly under 8lbs. So lets get to it... Semi custom, Traditions Hawken Woodsman, .54cal - 1:48 twist, 28" long barrel, 15/16" across the flats. TOTW Hawken rear sight, German silver front sight, set in copper base. Double set triggers that I lightly polished before making the final adjustments. Lock is strong! Spitfire #11 nipple, Hickory ramrod. All of the screws on the under rib and the ramrod thimbles have a thin coating of blue loctite to ensure they do not loosen up. Nipple threads and Clean out screw are fully protected with silver anti seize. Barrel wedge key is tight. I browned the barrel with laurel mountain forge, as well as the rear sight and all screws on the stock. This is the 4th Traditions that I swapped a CVA 54cal barrel onto, due to hunting regulations in my state, so yes, I know what I am doing LOL. These barrels are fantastic shooters out to 200 yards!
